I was able to run this unit on a 50' cord with no problems. EC12 Cold Start Problems - The Hitachi EC12 is a very solid contractor compressor. While these problems occur across the board among compressor manufacturers, there is a product that helps eliminate the issue. Called the Smart Start by Conrader it replaces the standard inlet filter of the compressor. Keeps on running - I run 3 framing nailers on the one compressor. No problems, runs great. Shipping Problems - I was amazed how little packing/protection is provided in the box for the compressor. I opened the box and was rewared with a lot of little plastic pieces that once were the air filter assembly. Since there does not appear to be a way for replacement parts to be sent to me, I will return the compressor without use. Bob, a home improvement enthusiast - I have owned this compressor for 3 years now and it continues to run flawlessly. I agree that the gauges are mounted in an area where they can be easily damaged but if you take care when using and transporting the compressor, you won't have any problems. Happy, but could be happier - The compressor is still fairly new and seems to provide excellent power for framing guns, finishing nailers, and hoppers. However, I am not incredibly impressed with this compressors ability to start. I realize during the cold winter mornings (not too cold in the San Francisco bay area), that some compressors require an empty tank to kick over, but this is getting a little ridiculous. I have seen on another review that a Smart Start inlet filter can be purchased to cure this problem, but it's annoying that you need to buy new parts to cure problems on a new compressor. I guess having only one complaint for a power tool isn't too bad, but I'm sure there's a better compressor out there.

I bought it because I was tired of lugging around other compressors that didn't have wheels. The rolling design of this compressor is very good because it can easily go up and down stairs as well as over typical construction site obstacles. That said, here are the following quality problems I've had to deal with so far: The wheels were attached poorly and fell off on a few occasions. After a year of use the motor kept tripping breakers, so I took the compressor in for service and it received a new compressor and motor. I work on job sites that have ancient compressors that continue to function flawlessly (but they're really heavy to move around), so I'm a bit worried by the problems I've noticed in only 2 years of use. Because this compressor is oil lubricated, it does get sluggish in the winter. It also cannot supply as much air as the oil-free version. A trim subcontractor I know has the oil-free version and he has to rebuild his compressor annually with a $40 repair kit, so oil free isn't entirely without issues. If you already have a compressor you like, I'd bolt some good wheels onto it and weld a nice handle onto the frame. That way you'd have all the advantages of the Porter Cable Job Boss without the durability problems. It rolls! - Powerful motor and compressor. Runs on a 15 amp electrical circuit with no problems. *Great compressor* for the size** - Mine arrived intact, and save for having to fill the tires from 2 psi, and the errant cotterpin/washer-at-the-wheel wiggle, there were no problems. Get a clue Porter Cable! - First I will start by saying PC makes a good compressor and we have two at the company I work for. The first C3551 showed up with the roll cage dented in two places, the air filter post bent, scratched everywhere and the big problem something metal was loose in the engine and you could hear it banging around as you moved the compressor around. compressor was two flimsy pieces of cardboard on either side of the unit. I think all of my problems could have been solved with better packaging and Porter Cable would have kept the sale. Porter Cable lacks quality control - After following the breaking procedure, I noticed that the regulator wouldn't let out any air. (Also, the compressor being so quiet won me over and I was willing to overlook few minor problems in order to keep it. I will receiving a replacement compressor tomorrow and I will post how that worked out, at that point I will be adjusting my rating for the product.

The compressor has a very solid feel and is very heavy. They are adequate for moving the compressor around the garage, but would not work well on stairs or outside. However the rumble of the motor is much more tolerable than the high pitched whine of some of the other compressors I checked out. I have not experienced any electrical problems with breakers in my old house.
