- built-in handle is nice
- long 12V auto power cord
- two-year warranty

Negatives:
- When it stops automatically after inflating one item (such as a tire), it must be turned off and back on to inflate another item, or to increase pressure setting and continue filling.
- the air hose is fairly short.

found in MAC5200's description: com Product Review
Whether you need a compressor for woodworking, painting, caulking or construction, this 5-gallon Makita is a great choice, primarily because of its impressive 6-1/2 cfm at 90 psi on a 13. Built-in Storage Compartment - Conveniently stores air fittings & accessories. Air Hose Wrap - Stores 50 of 3/8" Air Hose with handle folded or upright. Large automotive style industrial air filter for increased air intake and greater efficiency.
found in MAC5200's reviews:
Good specs for the price range - 8 amp draw, collapsible cart, oil lubed pump, good air filter and ball valve drain. Did not find many other compressors in this price range with those specs and did not want to pay $600+ for a monster. The manual says it has a 50% duty cycle so if you need a compressor that will run without stopping look elsewhere.

On arrival the box had major rips and crushed areas fairly typical of my experiences of UPS shipment with heavy items. The cut in/ cut out pressures were a little low so a quick adjustment took care of that. The regulator worked fine and seemed to be more precise than some I have used.

POOR PERFORMER PERIOD! - I have been a carpenter for 15 years and have used alot of different compressors. This compressor is far to heavy and loud for the performance it puts out. The pressure drops too low before the motor kicks in and the wheels are too small for maneuvering jobsites.
If I had to do it again it would not be my first choice. - It is very loud and pressure does drop considerably before turning back on.
Big disappointment. - However, I was extremely disappointed with this compressor.

This compressor DOES NOT work on most 15 amp circuits; it just hums and sounds as if it's about to burn up. I comes from the factory with a low pressure setting.

found in T-635HD's description: From the Manufacturer
Thomas Industries T-635HD is a quiet running (69-decibel) 3/4 HP compressor that is both portable and versatile. Other uses include, tire inflating, painting, airbrushing, small air tools, and winterizing water lines and RV's.
found in T-635HD's reviews:
kinda load - Thomas has good tech support - Received as expected, actually a day early thanks Amazon, the compressor is very well packed for shipping.
Upon set-up and adding a regulator, all seems fine -but it is much much louder then expected, it seems to have blown the pressure switch after 4.5 hours, it will not hold air.
I'm now trying to get a reply from Thomas on where to take it or send it back for repair,I would like to resolve this as the compresser is a great size for one gun use.

Light weight professional grade compressor for small jobs - I was looking for a portable and not overly loud air compressor, for my low air-volume tools. I had a 4-gallon pancake compressor for several years, but at 70 lbs. Although it hardly qualifies as "quiet", it isn't nearly as noisy as other compressors I've heard. I installed a 16" stainless steel braided faucet plumbing hose on the compressor's air-outlet port; routed the hose out the back under the motor support, and screwed on a quick disconnect coupling. First thing that gets plugged into the quick-disconnect is a regulator, since none comes with the unit. Because the tank is only 2 gallons (to keep weight/bulk down), the pump comes on more often than on larger units, but when it does, it's only on for about 12 seconds (if you're not using air). The unit comes on when pressure drops below 100 PSI and goes off at 125 PSI. Translation: the compressor can be used continuously, without letup. Some compressors have only a 50% duty cycle, which means you shouldn't run it more than 30 minutes for every hour used, as that could cause excessive wear on the pump and/or motor.

You'd want a bigger unit if you had two roofing or stud-nailers going, but for low-air-volume requirements such as trim work, this little Thomas unit is just about perfect.

September 2006 update:

While working on a home renovation project, the compressor's low air pressure switch clicked, but the motor didn't start. By the time I got to the compressor, the motor was smoking, literally.

Compressors/Thomas T-635HD - Light weight, dependable; and quiet! This is what I was looking for in a compressor.and this is why I specifically went looking for Thomas Compressors.Since then I have been waiting for my Emglo to get retired so I too can be a proud owner of a Thomas T-635HD

One thing that I did not like when my Thomas T-635HD arrived was a real lack of directions to assemble the few parts that did need to be put on before operation, but anyone with common knowlege of compressors will figure it out. REMEMBER!!! to get a pressure control valve, and all the connections you will need to mount a hose coupler; because these items do not come with the tool.

This compressor is not intended for HIGH-PRODUCTION ie. if you are in the market for a compressor that is small, light;and dependabley quiet. Your search has ended here !

Don't get fooled by tool packs that come with nail gun, air-hose and compressor in one deal you will be looking for a new compressor soon.

Designed to be sturdy yet lightweight, the compressor weighs only 53.
found in D55151BN's reviews:
Good Compressor/Nailer combo - I bought this compressor mainly to run nailers for those jobs, as well as other around the house usage.

I had read that oil-lubed compressors were quieter and lasted longer, so I was looking for an oil-lubed motor in particular.

I was somewhat dissapointed by the amount of noise generated by the compressor. I'm not sure what it is yet, but it doesn't seem to affect the operation of the unit, and I didn't want to send it back for repairs, since I have a bit of a deadline on some of my jobs.

The rattling bit is the main reason for giving the compressor a 4 instead of a 5.

The compressor works very well, and I'm quite happy with it. It comes up to pressure quickly, and has an easily adjustable pressure switch, which allows you to adjust the cut-out and cut-in pressure. It seems fairly well made, and all the components are pretty easy to get to if repairs are needed for some reason. At the time I bought it, Amazon was running a very nice $75 off $300 promotion, and also offering a free air hose, so I feel that I got a great deal on a very good combo.

SINGLE STAGE AIR COMPRESSOR. Single Stage Cast Iron Compressor5 HP Peak, 20 Gallon.
found in VT6290's reviews:
Might work if received undamaged.......and with oil...and a few fixes - The shipping box is flimsy and cannot adequately support nor protect the compressor and parts. Mine arrived with a broken regulator, pressure gauge and air-filter assembly all of which apparently snapped off during shipment with no visible exterior box damage.

As the other reviewer also mentioned the compressor does NOT come with oil so be sure to have SAE30 air-compressor oil ready when it arrives. Also, you will need to provide your choice of air outlet connector.

If it wasn't for the bad shipment packaging I'd say initially that the compressor is a good buy but if Campbell Hausfeld has so little regard to protecting their product in shipment to you I question the integrity of the machine itself.

UPDATE 7/15: I am updating this review a full day after receiving and can add more to the trials and tribulations of purchasing a C-H compressor.

I was able to replace the broken regulator and gauge with a Home Depot Husky replacment for $17. The air filter assembly is currently taped but working until I can get a replacment. One leak occurred in the main pipeline to tank (seal was improperly installed), another in the undamaged tank pressure gauge (somone missed adding teflon tape) and the third in the pressure tubing to the cutoff switch (not tightened). All in all if you include travel time to Home Depot nearly 2-1/2 hours were spent just getting the compressor to work only to discover that there is a leak at weld where the pump mount attaches to the tank.) if using an extension cable as this compressor does draw a load when starting.

IMHO I wouldn't order a product like this if you need it for an immediate job as it will take to either repair yourself or to return and await a replacement. I needed this compressor to replace my dead one and ordered it to coincide with my time at home as I could not expect my wife to unload it.

VT6290 and FedEx - The box was busted on one side causing some of the content to spill outside (a tire and air filter). On top of that, FedEx delivered the box upside down, causing the discharge tube to bend, the air filter to separate from the pump, a busted pressure gauge and a bent handle bar. The tank takes around 4 minutes to fill up to 135 pounds of pressure.
The compressor DOES NOT include oil. The air filter supplied causes the compressor to be kind of noisy.

Except for the awful FedEx delivery, I am happy with the compressor. Free delivery, free air hose, no tax, and 10% off.

Product Description
8 Gallon, 15A Cast Iron Air Compressor, Oil Lube Pump With 2.
found in HL5501's reviews:
Good lightweight compressor - Twelve pairs of pintle hinges, each leg 2"x 3/16"x 20", took a long, long time.

Which brings me to my first complaint: during that job, a couple of the fittings under the protective plastic shield vibrated loose and leaked enough air that the compressor couldn't reach shut-off pressure. Using the nailer at 100psi, the compressor cycled fairly regularly, but could keep up with the nailer without any trouble.

Noisy? Yes, but so is every other air compressor I've ever heard, and it cycles fast enough that for occasional use it's tolerable.

My only real problem with the HL5501, other than fittings that come loose, is that the air outlet comes off the side of the manifold in such a way that by the time you've attached a water filter and a female quick-disconnect fitting, there's quite a bit of potential leverage hanging out there unprotected. I'm always worried about hitting it, or pulling the air hose too hard, or doing some such thing that bends the manifold, or tweaks the regulator, or busts the water filter.

Oh, and in freezing temperatures, the pressure release valve tends to stick open. Make sure to site it so that that air outlet is protected.

Sturdy, portable, cheap oil-lubricated compressor... But noisy! -

Let me start by saying that I can't live without an air compressor. Those of you who don't have one have no idea how much you'll use it and what an integral part of any household project or repair it will become when you finally have one. That being said, let me explain why I bought this particular compressor and what I think about it thus far.

Until recently, I had an 8-gallon oil-free compressor that was handed down to me from my dad after I bought him a large stationary garage unit about 6 years ago. This thing lasted about 13 years with very regular use with a few repairs over the years. This is absolutely unheard of with an oil-free compressor. In order to replace the blue tarp roof provided by FEMA with some actual shingles, I will need a compressor to power my roofing and framing nailers. Portability and reliability are important factors in order to assist with the reconstruction efforts of the community once the repairs to my home are complete. This is why I decided on an oil-lubricated compressor. Although I had great success with the aforementioned oil-free compressor, I do understand that this was more the exception than the rule. It is hard to find an oil-lubed compressor that is both portable and affordable., making them very difficult to get in and out of your truck/car by yourself, let alone getting them up a flight of stairs. The pressure switch is mounted to a post that is welded to the tank. This compressor does not come with oil, even though the instruction manual says "only use the oil that was shipped with the compressor." The other thing that you will run into is that it does not come with a coupler to connect an air hose to. Although this is very common for air tools not to come with the required fittings to connect it to a hose, there is one difference here. The threads in the pressure switch to install the quick-disconnect coupler are female. I have never seen a quick-disconnect air hose connector (the hose end that has the sleeve to release the connection) with male threads on it. (a brass pipe nipple for you plumbers out there)

Use:
The Campbell Hausfeld HL5501 overall seems to be a very good compressor. If you are looking into this compressor because of the reduced noise level that oil-lubed compressors are known for, then you will be disappointed. This compressor is every bit as loud as any comparable oil-free unit. The pressure gauge on mine reads 115 psi when it shuts off. The box advertises "125 psi max pressure", so I don't know if the guage isn't accurate or what, but the pressure switch is adjustable so this is easy to fix.

Conclusion:
I would recommend this compressor to the handy home user that wants the reliability and longevity of an oil-lube compressor, but doesn't want to spend a lot of money. I would not recommend this compressor if the noise level is a big issue, but be prepared to spend a lot more money for a belt-driven unit.

Design flaws - First one of these I received came out of the box damaged beyond repair. Switch was broke, regulator fitting broken off flush with the tank, tabs on the compressor that the shroud connects to were broken off from the compressor. After about 2 hours of use (with me that translates to about 3 months) one of the tabs on the compressor that connects to the shroud has broken off. I have not moved the compressor since the day I took it from its box. It's a bit loud but not as loud as some of the "oil free" compressors are.
