Porter-Cable is proud to introduce our first oil-lube compressor. When we first put our engineers on the task of designing an oil-lube compressor we gave them one priority; it could not have the same imported pump as all the other major brands have. Just as in a car, the lubrication system in the pump is the most vital part in a compressor. That is why this unit was designed with a patent pending oil slinger design as an integral part of the crankshaft that continues to lubricate the piston in any angle. The design features don't stop there; it boasts a cast-iron cylinder, stainless steel Swedish valves, and an automotive type paper filter to trap unwanted particles before they enter the system. Now, take this revolutionary pump engineered to last over 3,000 hours of use and add in the "High Pressure Technology" and you have compressor that will run at 150 pounds per square inch (PSI).5 horsepower induction motor is safely shrouded and acts as a wind tunnel providing more than enough air to cool the unit down even under the most strenuous conditions.3 HP Running

Maximum air power! More delivered air (CFM) gives you the power to do the job right and in less time. Durable cast iron construction and precision-engineered quality components.
found in SS3L3's reviews: A cheap way to get more CFM... but its still cheap. - This aircompressor is identical to my Ingersoll Rand SS3L3 compressor that I purchased through Northern Tool in the early summer of 2005. This is the first aircompressor that I have ever owned, so it was a learning experience from the start.
It is recommended that you purchase the IR SS3L3 startup kit as the compressor is delivered to you without any oil in it. When I plugged in the compressor to test it out, I found that the motor continued to run even as the gauge on the tank passed 130 psi.
I ran the compressor off and on for several months without any major issues. a little bit of die grinding, I rotated the tires on my car using the impact wrench and air ratchet, I used it to blow dust off my work bench and check the air in my tires on a routine basis. I bought the compressor because I have several project cars, and I would like to begin the serious work of restoring them. Recently, I have been looking at plans for a sandblasting cabinet, and I am starting to doubt that this compressor will stand up to the task of sand blasting for extended periods. Things I have learned about the compressor since its purchase that have led me to this conclusion:
1. (I swap between my compressor and my dryer on the only 230V outlet in my house). This borderline false advertising is similar to peak and RMS power ratings in audio amplifiers, though it is fairly standard operating procedure to rate motors in this fashion. Though it is quieter than a direct drive unit like the 30 gallon compressors sold at most hardware stores, 3450 RPM is still quite fast. With the pulley ratios, the compressor crank spins at 1200 RPM. Heavier duty systems might have the AC motor running at 1200-1750 RPM with the compressor running at ~700 RPM or less, resulting in a much quieter setup. There is apparently no available rebuild kit for the compressor itself, according to the local IR dealer, though they do sell gaskets and the oiling kit. It is a very simple design, consisting of essentially three parts; a cylinder head, cylinder block, and crankcase. It is a two cylinder, single stage compressor. The "valves" in the head are what I believe are called "reed valves", which are simply spring loaded "fingers" that cover holes in the cylinder head, and they move with the blowing/sucking of air as the pistons move in the cylinders (no mechanical actuation of the valves). The compressor can run fairly hot, especially when pressurizing the tank from zero pressure. I would like to add an intercooler in line to the tank as the compressed air is quite hot, and I think the compressor itself could use some more cooling. I bought some copper to fab up a larger heat sink for the compressor housing, though I haven't made it yet. The flywheel on the compressor is designed to move air over the unit, but I still think the design needs improvement. This makes me want to install a condensor between the compressor and tank). Copper tubing is used to route compressed air from the compressor to the tank, and I think some improvements could be made there, as well. One could remove the compressor to change the oil, but a better soultion would be to insert a ball valve in the oil drain plug for easy draining.
IR sells the SS5L5, which uses the same 60 gallon tank, but a 5 HP split phase 3450 RPM motor running a different two piston single stage compressor.
My biggest complaints are the use of the split phase motor, the relatively cheap design of the compressor (aluminum rods and lack of rod bearings), the flimsy pressure switch, and the cheap fittings used all over the machine. I will continue to use this unit for some time, but I am already considering either building my own low RPM, true 4-5 HP aircompressor from various parts suppliers, or just purchasing a new one from a company like Eaton Compressor. However, if you are considering something for medium-heavy duty, you might want to consider something with a little more quality, and therefore more cost. Like houses, I think good advice for someone looking to buy an aircompressor is "buy the most you can afford". I for one like the idea of a compressor running at a quiet 750 RPM at a mere 73 dBa, as opposed to my high revving 1200 RPM SS3L3. Meanwhile, my criticisms of this unit are based on what I'd like to see in a compressor, that is all. With authorized IR dealers all over the country, getting parts (like gaskets, pressure switches, and oiling kits) is pretty painless.

found in CPLDC2540S's reviews: A- compressor except for the regulator - I've been searching for a portable compressor for a couple of months now and near the end came up with three to chose from: the Emglo 55155, a Hitachi dual stack and this PC. Other compressors did meet these, but what draw me was the oil lube system that permits you to use it on uneven surfaces.5max) to not trip the circuit breakers, filtered intake (not output though) for longer motor life, shrouded motor for airflow from fan and good manual. Even for occasional home maintenance, air tools are more practical and less costly than expensive electric power tools with umpteen mechanical parts and exorbitantly priced batteries of all shapes and sizes. But before investing in smart air tools, you need a qualitycompressor. This popular 4-gallon twin stack aircompressor from Campbell Hausfeld is oil lubricated and built to last. Ideal for inflation, nailing, stapling and spraying jobs, this compressor also powers everything from sandblasters and spray guns to drills and die grinders in a matter of seconds. So, rather than investing in an expensive new electric tool set; save time and money with this 4-gallon compressor and Campbell Hausfeld's line of 70 high qualityair tools. The initial cost of an air tool is significantly lower than its electrically powered counterpart, and the average tool life expectancy is longer, too. Plus, when powered by this 4-gallon compressor, air tools deliver more torque and higher revolutions-per-minute than electric tools for less downtime and greater productivity.
found in HL5502's reviews: Good - I too bought this compressor from Costco and it came with a finish nailer. It isn't commerical quality, but it's perfect for anyone's home workshop/garage. Obviously it won't run tools that require huge volumes of air for extended periods of time.
All compressors are loud, this one is no different.
The weight is exactly what you'd expect, for a 4g compressor like this.
Contractor quality machine - rated for continuous use. Lightweight and portable - only 26 lbs. Low 4 amp draw - will operate anywhere Will operate any (1) finish gun or brad nailer The quietest finish/trim compressor on the market
found in T-617HDN's description:From the Manufacturer
The super quiet (60 decibel) T-617HDN is the hands down favorite for those that want a quiet running, long life compressor capable of handling any (1) finish gun or brad nailer. Additional uses include, airbrushing, inflating tires, air mattresses, sports equipment, and winterizing RV's and motor homes.
found in T-617HDN's reviews: When Quality & Quiet Matter More Than Price & Power - I researched compressors carefully around town and on the Web. Compressors available at the Borg and various local tool shops are gawdawful loud, heavy, and look to be made of cheap plastic and pot metal. The compressor will be carried around and used indoors. The unit is light enough to carry around easily, and its shape rides comfortably beside your walking legs (unlike pancake compressors). The unit seems to be assembled well using quality components.
The compressor only puts out about 1 CFM and has a 2 gallon tank.
You will not be happy with this compressor unless your needs and preferences are similar to mine. It really doesn't put out or hold much air. No durability experience since I haven't had the compressor for long.
Long life, contractor quality machine - rated for continuous use Low amp draw - works on 15 amp circuits and with extension cords Versatile - offers framing, roofing or finish gun capability 3/4 Horsepower - delivers 1.7 cfm at 100 psi. Lightweight and portable, only 26 pounds

Thomas Industries T-635HD is a quiet running (69-decibel) 3/4 HP compressor that is both portable and versatile. Other uses include, tire inflating, painting, airbrushing, small air tools, and winterizing water lines and RV's.
found in T-635HD's reviews: kinda load - Thomas has good tech support - Received as expected, actually a day early thanks Amazon, the compressor is very well packed for shipping.5 hours, it will not hold air. I'm now trying to get a reply from Thomas on where to take it or send it back for repair,I would like to resolve this as the compresser is a great size for one gun use. Thomas Tech did return my call - worked with me on phone to try & fix problem, he overnighted the replacement part and upon installation everything is up & running - good tec support, this has caused it to quiet a little. Light weight professional grade compressor for small jobs - I was looking for a portable and not overly loud aircompressor, for my low air-volume tools. I had a 4-gallon pancake compressor for several years, but at 70 lbs. Quality is first rate. Although it hardly qualifies as "quiet", it isn't nearly as noisy as other compressors I've heard. I installed a 16" stainless steel braided faucet plumbing hose on the compressor's air-outlet port; routed the hose out the back under the motor support, and screwed on a quick disconnect coupling. Because the tank is only 2 gallons (to keep weight/bulk down), the pump comes on more often than on larger units, but when it does, it's only on for about 12 seconds (if you're not using air). Translation: the compressor can be used continuously, without letup. Some compressors have only a 50% duty cycle, which means you shouldn't run it more than 30 minutes for every hour used, as that could cause excessive wear on the pump and/or motor.
You'd want a bigger unit if you had two roofing or stud-nailers going, but for low-air-volume requirements such as trim work, this little Thomas unit is just about perfect.
September 2006 update:
While working on a home renovation project, the compressor's low air pressure switch clicked, but the motor didn't start. By the time I got to the compressor, the motor was smoking, literally. Perhaps there was low voltage to that particular outlet in that 46-year-old house.

found in MAC700's reviews: Great compressor - This is a great little compressor with good output for the price. Mine arrived with a broken part which was no fault of the manufacturer, but they prompted sent me a replacement part without a problem. Great Product - shipping bad - I like Mikita tools for their quality build and reliabity. Our box was clearly tossed around or banged into during shippment which broke off the air filter assembly that screws into the cylinder head. To avoid the HUGE hassle of returning/shipping the compressor to Amazon, incurring shipping charges that were initially free when I ordered the compressor, lugging it back to UPS, and waiting for who knows how long for a replacement, I contacted Mikita and got a replacement part directly from them. The part was provided free for pick-up and was offered under warranty. Great little compressor - I have had this compressor for a couple of weeks now and really like it. It is a high quality unit clearly built to last. I chose this model over the very popular oil-free pancake compressors mainly for it's compact size and low noise level.
The unit is compact, but much heavier duty than similar Cr*ftman compressors I saw at Sears. I did have a problem where the plastic oil filler cap was cracked, but Makita quickly sent me a replacement part under warantee. I would recommend this unit to anyone looking for an occasional use compressor and does not want something large or loud. An Airbrushing Powerhouse -
I use it to power airbrushes along with an added-on airbrush regulator/gauge/moisture trap. This is exactly what I wanted for airbrushing. It has a much longer lifespan than "airbrush compressors". The airbrushes work consistently all throughout the refill phase. This is the muscle car of airbrush compressors even though it was made in Taiwan. 5 to 10 minutes of airbrushing in silence, and when it comes on it does have some volume, but it is so much less noise than an oilless.
I had to tighten down the crankcase cover (Ref# 29, Part# 304013-E) because it was leaking oil. It's the large exposed part of the motor that you can easily reach and tighten up with a screwdriver. Very good - The compressor is packed very well without any damage. It is built with high quality. After running it over 20 minuates, I discovered that I did not install the air filter. But overall, I am really impressed by its quality. Always damaged - I had the compressor sent out two times, both times, it arrived damaged.
The compressor looked great, felt great, only wish Makita would have packaged it with more padding. I called Makita and they wouldn't send me the broken part unless I went to one of their distributors, and my nearest one is 40 minutes away. Amazon has been great about both returns, but they won't send me a third compressor. Great little compressor - Be sure to fill with oil and install the air filter before starting. It required drilling out the check valve, retapping the threads, buying an equivalent part at the hardware store, and reinstalling. Serious PITA, but cost was minimal and repair works fine.
All in all, a great little compressor, and the best choice if noise is a concern. really good... - quiet, quality construction. Quiet, Solid, Well Made - What a top quality piece of equipment. I wanted a portable compressor for using my nail guns at old houses, and was ready to replace my antique mastodon shop compressor. I was thinking I may have to buy two compressors, most portable units were too loud for the shop. A few weeks ago I bought a Ridgid brand "oil-free" compressor at Home Depot but it was so loud that I couldn't use it indoors, even covered with a chunk of old carpet. It had good air flow. I looked at the Makita MAC2400, which was a quiet, quality unit, 4.3 CFM is higher than many of the 75-pound twin stack compressors I saw. To reduce cycling in the shop, I attached my 5-gallon air tank (the kind you use for putting air in a flat tire) to the tank side of the regulator with a T and snap coupler.like don't use the compressor in the bathtub. It's a large, high qualitycompressor mounted on a small, portable tank. You'll get really spoiled if you're used to a noisy oil-less compressor. Chalk up one for the good guys! - The other day I watched them throw a box containing a fragile clockwork I had ordered out of the Fed Ex van window onto my concrete driveway!) And with that, it's all Makita quality! Quiet, quick, and built to last. I would chance it again for this compressor. Recieved damaged, Makita service hopeless - Just received this compressor from Amazon/ToolKing. Called Makita to see if I could get the part under Warranty. Makita has a problem in the packing of these compressor's which leaves the valve exposed to being crushed inside the container. If you need to put the compressor into service right away, I suggest buying local or unfortunately another mfg.The compressor is quiet, and seems to run ok, I have only done the initial start up though.Seems to be a great little compressor.(supervisor)The compressor has been in service now for around 8mo.I did solder a new elbow onto a lower area of the check valve which works out better when the compressor rolls on its side. Very Good Product - Received compressor with great aprehension due to the negative reviews on the shipping "damges". Makita does produce quality products. Reviewer from Arizona - I am pleased with this Makita's compressor. Comparing it to other light weight/low capacity compressors I had before the engine noise is not that bad. It is well built with good quality materials. For instance the air filter is place in an aluminum container whereas most other small compressors use plastic containers instead which can easily break off. Arrived damaged II1 - As with my first experience the second Makita aircompressor arrived in the same condition. The elbow sticks out away from the compressor and it is very fragile and shears off with any type of contact from anything. Can you imagine every time the compressor were to hit anything or tip over the elbow would shear off.
Amazon was slow to ship and I got an email that said they were having trouble shipping the compressor to me. I don't know what kind of trouble but the compressor was sent to me several days after the initial time for shipping.
They are going to come and pick up the compressor and refund my money after they get the compressor. Somebody in management and quality control needs to wise up regarding this problem. Compact and well made! - I purchased this unit to replace an oil-less pancake compressor that burned out. The Makita MAC700 is super! It has all the attributes of a large high quality oil-lube compressor. By comparison, the pancake compressor this unit replaced was DREADFULLY loud. In my opinion, the longevity and quietness that an oil-lube compressor offers, far outweighs the time and slight inconvenience of routine maintenance. I love it! If you are looking for a light duty aircompressor, I highly recommend the MAC700 Hot Dog AirCompressor.
