Slow starting motor -
However I do have a problem with my machine as it's motor will not function on a cold morning outside. Once running it a real jewel and fairly quiet. Despite the Dewalt label this is a Chinese built unit and have seen the motor/unit in other low end machines.

Poorly designed shipping configuration - The plastic shroud surrounding the compressor motor has arrived broken on me twice, I am sending it back again. By placing the plastic housing on the outside of the box with a coil of compressor cable and a sheet of cardboard to protect it. The iron compressor tank should probably be on the outside.
Good Compressor/Nailer combo - I bought this compressor mainly to run nailers for those jobs, as well as other around the house usage.

I had read that oil-lubed compressors were quieter and lasted longer, so I was looking for an oil-lubed motor in particular.

I was somewhat dissapointed by the amount of noise generated by the compressor. I'm not sure what it is yet, but it doesn't seem to affect the operation of the unit, and I didn't want to send it back for repairs, since I have a bit of a deadline on some of my jobs.

The rattling bit is the main reason for giving the compressor a 4 instead of a 5.

The compressor works very well, and I'm quite happy with it. It seems fairly well made, and all the components are pretty easy to get to if repairs are needed for some reason. At the time I bought it, Amazon was running a very nice $75 off $300 promotion, and also offering a free air hose, so I feel that I got a great deal on a very good combo.

An air compressor isn't one of those must-have tools for the homeowner—-that is, until you've used one. The HL5501 has plenty of power for a stapler or nailer; imagine how quickly a chair rail could go up. Because it's a smaller unit, its air delivery is lower, so make sure you check the air requirements of the tools you intend to use it with.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste

From the Manufacturer
Ideal for inflating balls and tires, nailing fences, stapling protective wrap, and more, this 8-gallon air compressor offers a whole new world of around-the-house convenience. A handle and wheels make this compressor highly portable for doing jobs in the basement, on the roof, and in the yard. You'll get those occasional home repair jobs done more quickly and with less expensive with this Campbell Hausfeld compressor and air tools.

Compared to electric power tools, Campbell Hausfeld air tools save you both time and money. The initial cost of an air tool is significantly lower than its electrically powered counterpart, and the average life is longer. Air tools also deliver more torque and higher revolutions-per-minute than electric tools, helping you complete your jobs more quickly and effectively.

Product Description
8 Gallon, 15A Cast Iron Air Compressor, Oil Lube Pump With 2.3 Running HP Motor, 5.
found in HL5501's reviews:
Sturdy, portable, cheap oil-lubricated compressor... But noisy! -

Let me start by saying that I can't live without an air compressor. Those of you who don't have one have no idea how much you'll use it and what an integral part of any household project or repair it will become when you finally have one. That being said, let me explain why I bought this particular compressor and what I think about it thus far.

Until recently, I had an 8-gallon oil-free compressor that was handed down to me from my dad after I bought him a large stationary garage unit about 6 years ago. This thing lasted about 13 years with very regular use with a few repairs over the years. This is absolutely unheard of with an oil-free compressor. In order to replace the blue tarp roof provided by FEMA with some actual shingles, I will need a compressor to power my roofing and framing nailers. Portability and reliability are important factors in order to assist with the reconstruction efforts of the community once the repairs to my home are complete. This is why I decided on an oil-lubricated compressor. Although I had great success with the aforementioned oil-free compressor, I do understand that this was more the exception than the rule. It is hard to find an oil-lubed compressor that is both portable and affordable., making them very difficult to get in and out of your truck/car by yourself, let alone getting them up a flight of stairs. Also, the plastic shroud that covers the motor/pump is slightly cracked because it contacts a part underneath it. This compressor does not come with oil, even though the instruction manual says "only use the oil that was shipped with the compressor." The other thing that you will run into is that it does not come with a coupler to connect an air hose to. Although this is very common for air tools not to come with the required fittings to connect it to a hose, there is one difference here. I have never seen a quick-disconnect air hose connector (the hose end that has the sleeve to release the connection) with male threads on it. (a brass pipe nipple for you plumbers out there)

Use:
The Campbell Hausfeld HL5501 overall seems to be a very good compressor. If you are looking into this compressor because of the reduced noise level that oil-lubed compressors are known for, then you will be disappointed. This compressor is every bit as loud as any comparable oil-free unit.

Conclusion:
I would recommend this compressor to the handy home user that wants the reliability and longevity of an oil-lube compressor, but doesn't want to spend a lot of money. I would not recommend this compressor if the noise level is a big issue, but be prepared to spend a lot more money for a belt-driven unit.

At just a foot high and less than two feet wide out of the carton, this compressor was quite a bit smaller than we expected, so to be fair, we quickly lowered our expectations. The joke was on us, though, because this little powerhouse just doesn’t quit, and we learned that you can’t judge a compressor by its size. Emglo’s half-century in the compressor business is evident in this model, and with a couple of small exceptions (we’ll get into that in a minute), we don’t think anyone could make a finer piece of air power. Now, this may be a plus or a minus in your book, but we liked the fact that the compressor is factory set to power on at 100 psi an+d shut off at 120 psi, and the cycle time was under 15 seconds.) It has air aplenty for two nailers at once, and with that fast recovery, the job will get done in no time.

In balance, this is one of the best compressor’s we’ve seen for the size, power, ruggedness and incredible portability it offers. Here’s to a great pairing of two great toolmakers.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste

2 HP, 4 Gallon, Electric Single Tank Hand Carry Compressor, 4.
    found in D55155's reviews:
Emglo (Dewalt) compressor - I have had this compressor for about 6 months or so. I got this compressor when i had to put baseboards and crown moldings in a house. I looked at both the Hitachi and Dewalt compressor for about 4 months before i got it. This compressor also has a roll cage to protect the motor that is nice and can come off easily to access the motor.
Major quality control problems... - Naturally when it came time to get a new compressor, I decided to go for Dewalt as well.

Once the package arrived, the air filter was broken and the motor/compressor was not operating. The motor won't even turn, it is completely jammed. To my surprise the second unit came with a broken air filter which completely boggles my mind as it is in a protected area and I can't see how this could be damaged during shipping. If it was the air filter only, I would have kept it, but the frame on this unit was completely twisted and the face place where the gages are on was completely warped out of shape.

I think I have had it with getting a Dewalt compressor.

awesome tool - I bought this compressor about 6 months ago and love everything about it. It doesn't roll around in the back of my truck or burn your hands when you touch the motor casing accidentally(because it's all encased).
Perfect compressor for small jobs - This compressor will fill all your needs for small jobs on the worksite. It is flawless for air tools that do not require a large continuous flow of high pressure air. I've used it with a dewalt finishing nailer, brad nailer, air blower, porter cable gravity feed spray gun, and husky cut off wheel. Heavy use of my 4" grinder will cause the motor to be on constantly and air pressure will drop too low to power the grinder at usable rpms.
Damaged poorly packaged - After looking a long time for a compressor to do trim work on my home, I decided to purchase the D55155 compressor. The second unit arrived with the motor frozed up. Beware that when you buy this compressor you may have issue with the compressor being damaged or defective due to poorly / cardboard packaging inside the shipping box.
Major quality control and service issues - I am a contractor and have had this compressor for three years. This is the worst compressor I have ever owned. It starts very slowly and pops the breaker about a dozen times before the motor reaches full speed (rpm), then it runs fine until it cools down and the problem starts again. I should have just replaced the compressor for the headache it's been.
A pleasure to use - The only item I found could use more thought was the routing of the power cable from the switch box to the motor - somewhat vulnerable, yet still protected by the base of the unit.
No bad feelings about P-C products, the pancake compressor just gave up the ghost early and had to be replaced with a more capable unit - so far the Dewalt seems like a super piece.

Thomas Industries T-635HD is a quiet running (69-decibel) 3/4 HP compressor that is both portable and versatile. Other uses include, tire inflating, painting, airbrushing, small air tools, and winterizing water lines and RV's.
    found in T-635HD's reviews:
Light weight professional grade compressor for small jobs - I was looking for a portable and not overly loud air compressor, for my low air-volume tools. I had a 4-gallon pancake compressor for several years, but at 70 lbs. Although it hardly qualifies as "quiet", it isn't nearly as noisy as other compressors I've heard. I installed a 16" stainless steel braided faucet plumbing hose on the compressor's air-outlet port; routed the hose out the back under the motor support, and screwed on a quick disconnect coupling. Because the tank is only 2 gallons (to keep weight/bulk down), the pump comes on more often than on larger units, but when it does, it's only on for about 12 seconds (if you're not using air). Translation: the compressor can be used continuously, without letup. Some compressors have only a 50% duty cycle, which means you shouldn't run it more than 30 minutes for every hour used, as that could cause excessive wear on the pump and/or motor.

You'd want a bigger unit if you had two roofing or stud-nailers going, but for low-air-volume requirements such as trim work, this little Thomas unit is just about perfect.

    September 2006 update:

While working on a home renovation project, the compressor's low air pressure switch clicked, but the motor didn't start. By the time I got to the compressor, the motor was smoking, literally. Am wondering if the motor would have burned out had I not gotten to it in time.

Even for occasional home maintenance, air tools are more practical and less costly than expensive electric power tools with umpteen mechanical parts and exorbitantly priced batteries of all shapes and sizes. But before investing in smart air tools, you need a quality compressor. This popular 4-gallon twin stack air compressor from Campbell Hausfeld is oil lubricated and built to last. Ideal for inflation, nailing, stapling and spraying jobs, this compressor also powers everything from sandblasters and spray guns to drills and die grinders in a matter of seconds. So, rather than investing in an expensive new electric tool set; save time and money with this 4-gallon compressor and Campbell Hausfeld's line of 70 high quality air tools. The initial cost of an air tool is significantly lower than its electrically powered counterpart, and the average tool life expectancy is longer, too. Plus, when powered by this 4-gallon compressor, air tools deliver more torque and higher revolutions-per-minute than electric tools for less downtime and greater productivity.
    found in HL5502's reviews:
incomplete package - As someone who is new to the Air tool game, I didn't want to spend alot of money seeing how I do not use air tools regularly but wanted to try them out.To get longer service life than oil free units, This compressor is an oil lubricated unit and yet it does not come with oil! I guess thats one way they can cut costs. It also does not come with a quick connect fitting at the output end, but rather has female threads that you screw an air hose into.
I saw this compressor for 139.
The manual is not very well written at all, so take your time and read it over a couple of times!
When you get this compressor, you will have to go out and buy; 1 bottle of mobile one synthetic motor oil(10w30)for abot 5 dollars, a 1/4 inch fitting and quick connect(about 12 dollars). Now you are ready to plug in a hose and air tools.I am extremely happy with this compressor-it really isn't any noisier than other compressors in this price range-lets face it-compressors are a power tool and thus are loud!I did not find the noise that bad at all.
My total investment to get this up and running was still less than 200 dollars which is not bad for an oil lubed compressor.

Poor shipping procedures--TWICE! - I ordered this compressor and framing nailer for a shop I was building. Finally the box arrived-late-I had to borrow some air tools. The compressor had no oil in it. It had obviously been turned on it's side and it leaked out over everything-compressor and nailgun. I installed them, replaced the oil and plugged it in only to get a motor hum that quickly kicked off the breaker. The airgun I borrowed was a Bostich, and it worked extremely well.
