Light weight professional grade compressor for small jobs - I was looking for a portable and not overly loud air compressor, for my low air-volume tools. I had a 4-gallon pancake compressor for several years, but at 70 lbs., it was just too heavy and bulky to lug around. Sold it and purchased the inexpensive Sears Craftsman model 15210, a 2 gallon, oil unit. The Sears unit came with numerous accessories and was only 40 lbs. -- much more portable than the pancake unit. Unfortunately, it was also VERY noisy, so it was returned. The Thomas 3/4 HP model, at 26 pounds, is so lightweight that I can comfortably pick it up with TWO fingers. It's also very small: 16" long, 17. Quality is first rate. Although it hardly qualifies as "quiet", it isn't nearly as noisy as other compressors I've heard. I installed a 16" stainless steel braided faucet plumbing hose on the compressor's air-outlet port; routed the hose out the back under the motor support, and screwed on a quick disconnect coupling. First thing that gets plugged into the quick-disconnect is a regulator, since none comes with the unit. This setup works fine. Because the tank is only 2 gallons (to keep weight/bulk down), the pump comes on more often than on larger units, but when it does, it's only on for about 12 seconds (if you're not using air). The unit comes on when pressure drops below 100 PSI and goes off at 125 PSI. Translation: the compressor can be used continuously, without letup. Some compressors have only a 50% duty cycle, which means you shouldn't run it more than 30 minutes for every hour used, as that could cause excessive wear on the pump and/or motor. You'd want a bigger unit if you had two roofing or stud-nailers going, but for low-air-volume requirements such as trim work, this little Thomas unit is just about perfect. If you can afford the best and need a truly portable machine, this is it. September 2006 update: While working on a home renovation project, the compressor's low air pressure switch clicked, but the motor didn't start. By the time I got to the compressor, the motor was smoking, literally. In any case, the little Thomas had sat there for a few minutes just humming; and overheated. Am wondering if the motor would have burned out had I not gotten to it in time. As hot as it was, it should have shut off by itself, but maybe it lacks over-heating circuitry. After it cooled, I plugged it into an outlet on another circuit and it worked fine. |

by Emglo found in M800-HC4V's reviews: Handy little machine! - I bought this little guy to occasionally run my finish nailer, blow some sawdust around, and pump up a low tire every now and then. My review may not give you the info you need if you plan on using it hard. I will say it does appear to be built pretty well. My only problem with it when it arrived was a leak in the plastic line that equalizes the pressure between the tanks. It was easy to fix. Because the fittings use air pressure to seal themselves, you can pull the line right out of the fitting when there is no pressure in the tanks. It just slips out of the O-ring in the fitting. There was a tiny chip of metal in the fitting causing the leak, so I just wiped it off and pushed the plastic line back in. Works fine and the leak is no more! The controls are nice and easy to use, and the single handle makes it easy to carry the Emglo in one hand and the hose in the other when changing locations. |

Excellent Air Compressor - I had previously made the LOUD mistake of getting a "maintenance-free" air compressor. Although not silent, this air compressor is MUCH more tolerable. This compressor is also of good quality and very sturdy (heavy) construction. It works great for all of my nail guns, even running two framing nailers. TO HEAVY - I owne several Makita tools and have been quite pleased with there LS 1412 compound miter was and 12v impact driver. So when my old compressor quit I compared new ones and chose this one. It works great, looks good and is quieter but its a lot heavier than the others out there. I sent it back and recieved the Dewalt D55155 compressor and am very pleaded with it. I do not recomend the Makita for those who move a compressor around a lot but if your a weekend warrior it a excellant choice. Good compressor but bad packing - I bought this compressor and when I got it there was a crack in the actual compressor housing. I got on Amazon and returned it and they promptly sent another one out to me. When I got this one it had damage to the front air gauge area from the loose air cleaner banging around free in the box. Also, the frame of the unit was tweaked a bit. Everything worked fine on this one so I just decided to keep it instead of waiting a week for another to arrive. The unit works really great I have to say! Pumps up quick, its very very quiet and has really good connections and gauges on the front panel. The only drawback to it is the weight. I think they should include a set of wheels or make a cart for it. Overall im happy with the purchase, it just sucks that they have such poor packing. The other Reviews are Correct, this is a great compressor - This is a quality compressor. The handle is in the center, so carrying it is well balanced. The compressor is just as quiet as others report. I have it in the corner of my workshop about 10 from me. Why did I get this compressor? In sum, (1) I wanted a GOOD quality tool that was not Chineese junk, (2) I wanted at least 4 cfm for tools and (2) I did not want to spend a fortune. There seems to be several classes or levels of compressor in the lower price range. Unless you are getting a specialized mini-compressor just for a small brad gun, the $125-175 compressors are mostly junk: loud and rough. This Makita is in the next step up, with compressors in the $225 to 325 range. Most of this second tier are either made for just for job sites or are just bigger cheaply made compressors. I chose the Makita over the Dewalt for one reason: quiet. The Dewalt is an excellent compressor, but you cannot use it next to you in an exclosed shop -- its too loud. So, I wanted a quality tool and one that could live in the shop next to me. The Makita does both in spades. It is a very well made little compressor. The fit and finish is great. It has a dual personality: it works and looks great in the corner of the shop AND is perfect for taking to a job site or the back yard. The compressor seems to live up to its specs. I have easily run 3/8 and 1/2 inch impact wrenches, a brad gun and a finish nail gun, along with blow guns, etc. When I went to use a Snap-On 7200 3/8" air ratchet, the performance was just adequate. Then I read the spec for the ratchet and it calls for 4. The Makita is rated at 4. SO, you do have to watch the cfm ratings on tools: I am sure a 8 cfm jitterbug sander will not work. I have not owned a compressor is many years. I looked long and hard for the best of all worlds: quality, size, price, and cfm. As an advanced and serious home workshop dude, this review is not written for the pros. But for a serious homeowner that appreciates quality tools and needs a general purpose compressor, I believe I found the perfect compressor. |

The unloading elbow was snapped off from the check valve assy. Called Makita to see if I could get the part under Warranty. Please keep in mind, the shipping box is extra heavy duty, I recieved the box in PERFECT condition, no crushed corners.The valve is on the side and all it takes is a slight bump and it's sheared off.If you need to put the compressor into service right away, I suggest buying local or unfortunately another mfg.The compressor is quiet, and seems to run ok, I have only done the initial start up though.Seems to be a great little compressor. Received Item, but can't use it yet. - Based on other reviews, I'd have probably agreed and given this item 5 stars. BUT, because of the poor packaging, and the probable mishandling by UPS, the Unloading Valve was broken off inside the main Check Valve. These to pieces are located on the side of the unit, right next to the outer wall of the cardboard shipping box. So, if this package was dropped on its side, which very likely, it would receive this type of damage. C'mon guys, properly package this stuff SO IT WON'T GET DAMAGED!!. Great little compressor - I've used this guy for about a month on a siding project, and it's worked very nicely. It is indeed much quieter than most, but still keeps up with my coil nailer. I haven't tried it with two nailers at once; that might push it a bit, but I can't say for sure. Be sure to fill with oil and install the air filter before starting. It required drilling out the check valve, retapping the threads, buying an equivalent part at the hardware store, and reinstalling. Serious PITA, but cost was minimal and repair works fine. All in all, a great little compressor, and the best choice if noise is a concern. Damaged Goods - After reading the previous negative reviews which I thought were anomolies, I received the unit and much to my dismay.it was damaged too. The black plastic engine housing was cracked but remained in place, the air/condensation release valve at the base of the tank was broken off at the tank !?#%#! After a little hand work I removed what remained of the fitting, reversed and reinstalled the valve. Although very robust the shipping box itself was damaged and showed signs of oil leakage from within the box. The unit is packaged very well with internal blocking and bracing but it must be being mis-handled during shipment for the damage I'm seeing to occur. After repairs (seems odd to repair a brand new machine) it seems to run great, no oil or air leaks. Although I've only operated the unit for about an hour it's very quiet I'd say less than 70dBA at 10 feet which is important to me since my wife and I will occassionally use it inside the house. Arrived damaged - After opening the cardboard box that was obviously crushed, I found the plastic motor cover broked and the brass unloading elbow broken-off in the check valve attached to the side of the tank. I called the Makita service center and explained the problem. They said I should sent it back, but agreed to fix it under warranty. When I took it in I got the same unenthusiastic treatment; 7-10 days to fix, or an additional 10-14 if they had to order the parts. I fault Makita for poor packaging and the FedEx gorillas for their mishandling. Excellent product - It was shipped without any damage, all parts are present. It works great, simple install and pretty straightforward operation. Another Damaged compressor - both the shroud and the unloading valve were broken (see other reviews) with no apparent damage to the shipping box. Makita service would not replace parts under warranty so I had to send the whole unit back to Amazon. Am waiting for my replacement unit (backordered) from Amazon with my fingers crossed. It's time Amazon stepped up to the plate and acknowledge that there is a serious problem with this unit arriving damaged. Also I am EXTREMELY dissatisfied with Makita's response to this issue. This will be the last Makita product that I own. Makita MAC700 -nice little compressor - I almost didn't order this compressor after reading all the reviews about shipping damage, but mine arrived in perfect shape. My old pancake compressor finally died. It was so noisy that I was almost glad to see it go. The Makita is a beautiful machine. It is resonably portable and very very quiet for a compressor. No problem at all running it inside a room close to where you are working. The drain valve at the bottom makes quick work of draining the tank at the end of the day. As noted in other reviews, it is a little top heavy and can fall over if just put in the back of your truck. Just tie it to something and you'll be fine. I've only had this for a few weeks, so I can't comment on long term reliability. great little compresssor - Mine arrived in perfect condition--no broken parts. Works great,and it is much quieter than the oil-less. Is perfect for use in the garage and airing up tires etc.My handyman is jealous-because my compressor is better than his!. Very efficient Compressor - com, I decided to purchase "The Hot Dog" compressor. As lot of reviewer mentioned, it is quite and works very efficiently. When I received the packgae, the compressor had oil over it leaked from the bottle supplied with it. One thing I would like with the compressor is a package of some hose connectros and adapters. It is as advertised - I recently purchased this unit and so far I am very pleased. The box arrived with oil on the exterior, but it was only from the temporary oil plug. It is very quiet w/little vibration. I also bought the Bostich 152K which has also been flawless and works very will with the MAC700. If you're considering an oil less compressor,,, don't. This unit is not supposed to be a "contractor's" compressor. If you need a compressor for big job sites, buy an appropriate unit. For home, shop, garage use, it seems perfect. shipping problems - We received the mac700 in a damaged condition. The unloading elbow had a small fitting broken off inside. This fitting was the elbow from the pressure sensing line. We tried to get the broken stub out with an easy out and snapped the easy out off. Amazon would have taken the compressor back but we didn't want the chance of receiving another broken compressor. We ended up going to the service center and buying a new unloading elbow and fitting, cost $30. The compressor is very quiet and works well so far. Makita needs to something about the shipping carton. Great compressor, but check the box thouroughly before signing for delivery! - After working with a friend's older version of this compressor for the last eight months, I decided to splurge and get my own. If this compressor is anything like the older model, it's going to last forever. We left the older model out, under a saw table, in rain, snow, 100 degree heat - you name it. Never had any problems with it. I've only had this one for 2 days, so I can't speak much about it other than to say it's quiet enough to use and talk at the same time, and it feels very well built. It's also heavier than I expected, but the carrying handle makes moving it around easy on the back. When it arrived, I checked the box, and there was only one small ding in a corner. What I should have done was kept the FedEx driver there until I actually got it out of the box. It looks like someone must've dropped it, and from a pretty good height! One of the legs was bent about 2 inches, so the compressor would rock when set down. Fortunately, the compressor itself (external tubes and gauges and whatnot) are all fine. I fired it up and it ran fine, so I decided to keep it. It's annoying, but I don't want to go through the exchange process and be without air for another two weeks. The startup process is fairly simple. The manual doesn't explain what goes where when you open the box, but it's reasonably self-evident. There are two plastic plugs on the compressor that need to come out. One covers the oil filler, and one covers the air intake port. You replace the plug on the air intake port (topmost plug) with the included air filter, and you replace the oil filler plug with the included oil cap. There's a window into the oil reservoir so you can see how much oil is in it. Before you run it for the first time, fill it (with the included oil) until the oil line is midway in the window. Then, open the air release valve at the very bottom of the air tank and run the compressor for 20 minutes. Check the oil level periodically, of course! On a related note, I also bought the Campbell Hausfeld MP520010AV air tool accessory kit to get me started. For the price, I'm happy with that too. |
