shipping problems - The unloading elbow had a small fitting broken off inside. This fitting was the elbow from the pressure sensing line. Amazon would have taken the compressor back but we didn't want the chance of receiving another broken compressor. We ended up going to the service center and buying a new unloading elbow and fitting, cost $30. The compressor is very quiet and works well so far.
makita mac700 2hp air compressor - i purchased this compressor about a year ago from amazon.im a contractor and need a good durable compressor that i can use everyday.the very next day the oil site glass got broken and the same brass fitting got sheered off again.
Damaged Goods -
The black plastic engine housing was cracked but remained in place, the air/condensation release valve at the base of the tank was broken off at the tank !?#%#! After a little hand work I removed what remained of the fitting, reversed and reinstalled the valve.
After repairs (seems odd to repair a brand new machine) it seems to run great, no oil or air leaks.

The Wheels! - I have given this unit a 5 star rating and this is my third compressor that I've owned over past years.
My one beef with the C3551 is what should be it's more innovative feature; the damn wheels! Instead of mounting them directly on the tublar frame with poorly fitting washers and lock-nuts, it seems like running an axle through the frame would have kept the wheels more firmly attached and lined up better. I'm going to modify my Job Boss with a Jet 3/8"x50' air hose reel bolted right on top of that cover plate and not only eleminate some of the mess with air lines snaking all over the floor but should also keep anyone from standing on that plate. You can find air hose reels in Amazon's Tool Crib listings.

An air compressor isn't one of those must-have tools for the homeowner—-that is, until you've used one. The HL5501 has plenty of power for a stapler or nailer; imagine how quickly a chair rail could go up. Because it's a smaller unit, its air delivery is lower, so make sure you check the air requirements of the tools you intend to use it with.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste

    From the Manufacturer
Ideal for inflating balls and tires, nailing fences, stapling protective wrap, and more, this 8-gallon air compressor offers a whole new world of around-the-house convenience. A handle and wheels make this compressor highly portable for doing jobs in the basement, on the roof, and in the yard. You'll get those occasional home repair jobs done more quickly and with less expensive with this Campbell Hausfeld compressor and air tools.

Compared to electric power tools, Campbell Hausfeld air tools save you both time and money. The initial cost of an air tool is significantly lower than its electrically powered counterpart, and the average life is longer. Air tools also deliver more torque and higher revolutions-per-minute than electric tools, helping you complete your jobs more quickly and effectively.

    Product Description
8 Gallon, 15A Cast Iron Air Compressor, Oil Lube Pump With 2.
    found in HL5501's reviews:
Good lightweight compressor - Twelve pairs of pintle hinges, each leg 2"x 3/16"x 20", took a long, long time.

Which brings me to my first complaint: during that job, a couple of the fittings under the protective plastic shield vibrated loose and leaked enough air that the compressor couldn't reach shut-off pressure. No big deal to pull the cover (four phillips-head screws) and tighten the fittings, but I don't think they ought to have vibrated loose in the first place. Using the nailer at 100psi, the compressor cycled fairly regularly, but could keep up with the nailer without any trouble.

Noisy? Yes, but so is every other air compressor I've ever heard, and it cycles fast enough that for occasional use it's tolerable.

My only real problem with the HL5501, other than fittings that come loose, is that the air outlet comes off the side of the manifold in such a way that by the time you've attached a water filter and a female quick-disconnect fitting, there's quite a bit of potential leverage hanging out there unprotected. I'm always worried about hitting it, or pulling the air hose too hard, or doing some such thing that bends the manifold, or tweaks the regulator, or busts the water filter. Make sure to site it so that that air outlet is protected.

Sturdy, portable, cheap oil-lubricated compressor... But noisy! -

Let me start by saying that I can't live without an air compressor. Those of you who don't have one have no idea how much you'll use it and what an integral part of any household project or repair it will become when you finally have one. That being said, let me explain why I bought this particular compressor and what I think about it thus far.

Until recently, I had an 8-gallon oil-free compressor that was handed down to me from my dad after I bought him a large stationary garage unit about 6 years ago. This thing lasted about 13 years with very regular use with a few repairs over the years. This is absolutely unheard of with an oil-free compressor. In order to replace the blue tarp roof provided by FEMA with some actual shingles, I will need a compressor to power my roofing and framing nailers. Portability and reliability are important factors in order to assist with the reconstruction efforts of the community once the repairs to my home are complete. This is why I decided on an oil-lubricated compressor. Although I had great success with the aforementioned oil-free compressor, I do understand that this was more the exception than the rule. It is hard to find an oil-lubed compressor that is both portable and affordable., making them very difficult to get in and out of your truck/car by yourself, let alone getting them up a flight of stairs. This compressor does not come with oil, even though the instruction manual says "only use the oil that was shipped with the compressor." The other thing that you will run into is that it does not come with a coupler to connect an air hose to. Although this is very common for air tools not to come with the required fittings to connect it to a hose, there is one difference here. I have never seen a quick-disconnect air hose connector (the hose end that has the sleeve to release the connection) with male threads on it. So, even if you already have the fitting on hand, make sure that you get a male-male adapter in order to make the connection. (a brass pipe nipple for you plumbers out there)

    Use:
The Campbell Hausfeld HL5501 overall seems to be a very good compressor. If you are looking into this compressor because of the reduced noise level that oil-lubed compressors are known for, then you will be disappointed. This compressor is every bit as loud as any comparable oil-free unit.

    Conclusion:
I would recommend this compressor to the handy home user that wants the reliability and longevity of an oil-lube compressor, but doesn't want to spend a lot of money. I would not recommend this compressor if the noise level is a big issue, but be prepared to spend a lot more money for a belt-driven unit.

found in HL5502's description: From the Manufacturer
Even for occasional home maintenance, air tools are more practical and less costly than expensive electric power tools with umpteen mechanical parts and exorbitantly priced batteries of all shapes and sizes. But before investing in smart air tools, you need a quality compressor. This popular 4-gallon twin stack air compressor from Campbell Hausfeld is oil lubricated and built to last. Ideal for inflation, nailing, stapling and spraying jobs, this compressor also powers everything from sandblasters and spray guns to drills and die grinders in a matter of seconds. So, rather than investing in an expensive new electric tool set; save time and money with this 4-gallon compressor and Campbell Hausfeld's line of 70 high quality air tools. The initial cost of an air tool is significantly lower than its electrically powered counterpart, and the average tool life expectancy is longer, too. Plus, when powered by this 4-gallon compressor, air tools deliver more torque and higher revolutions-per-minute than electric tools for less downtime and greater productivity.
    found in HL5502's reviews:
incomplete package - As someone who is new to the Air tool game, I didn't want to spend alot of money seeing how I do not use air tools regularly but wanted to try them out.To get longer service life than oil free units, This compressor is an oil lubricated unit and yet it does not come with oil! I guess thats one way they can cut costs. It also does not come with a quick connect fitting at the output end, but rather has female threads that you screw an air hose into.
I saw this compressor for 139.
The manual is not very well written at all, so take your time and read it over a couple of times!
When you get this compressor, you will have to go out and buy; 1 bottle of mobile one synthetic motor oil(10w30)for abot 5 dollars, a 1/4 inch fitting and quick connect(about 12 dollars). Now you are ready to plug in a hose and air tools.I am extremely happy with this compressor-it really isn't any noisier than other compressors in this price range-lets face it-compressors are a power tool and thus are loud!I did not find the noise that bad at all.
My total investment to get this up and running was still less than 200 dollars which is not bad for an oil lubed compressor. This unit would have been 4 or 5 stars if it came with better directions, oil, and a quick conect fitting on the end.

Noisy air compressor - I just got this compressor a day ago. It came with a Campbell Hausfeld 2 1/2 inch finish nailer, an air hose and a quick release air fitting. The compressor fills up quickly but is noisy.
Just got this at COSTCO w/finish nailer - I just got this compressor a few days ago and have not really had a chance to test it fully. It came with a Campbell Hausfeld 2 1/2 inch finish nailer, an air hose and a quick release air fitting. The compressor fills up quickly but is a little loud. I thought the oiled compressors were quieter. I had been shopping around for an affordable compressor and realized that with COSTCO's return policy that I couldn't go wrong.

    found in CPLDC2540P's reviews:
Design flaws - First one of these I received came out of the box damaged beyond repair. Switch was broke, regulator fitting broken off flush with the tank, tabs on the compressor that the shroud connects to were broken off from the compressor. After about 2 hours of use (with me that translates to about 3 months) one of the tabs on the compressor that connects to the shroud has broken off. I have not moved the compressor since the day I took it from its box. It's a bit loud but not as loud as some of the "oil free" compressors are.

    found in D55155R's reviews:
disappointed - The compressor unit I just received had the manual, oil and dipstick in a separate package in the box with the compressor. Besides not fitting tightly in the unit, the measuring portion of the dipstick did not read the oil level properly. I was able to get it replaced at no charge at my local service center but if I had depended on the wrong dipstick to gage the oil in the unit I would have burned up the compressor and as it says in the manual, you are not covered if you run your units low on oil.
