I wanted a compressor with a cage, oil-less, side stacked tanks, and preferably some sort of lined cylinders. The last reason was because the Craftsman compressor that I had ( 220v 6hp/33gal ) the tank walls surface rusted and the air/water separator ( thank goodness I had one ) would eventually turn rusty red. The Makita is not all that light, but it is pretty well balanced,and compared to my Craftsman ( which isnt really fair because of the motor size ) it is much more quiet, this unit is nicely finished and recovers very quickly - usually runs about 10 seconds after I realize it is running again. I like that idea, but trying to accomodate an inline filter is more of a problem, unless there is room behind the panel( doubtful ). |

The glaring exception is the air filter hanging off the side - I can see this part's going to be replaced at some point when I throw it in a truck bed. In this case, the air filter is just thrown in loose inside the box - mine broke one of the gauge glasses. Very pleased - This is my first air compressor, and I just received it yesterday so can't vouch for long-term quality, but I just wanted folks to know that it has ZERO damage. The air filter was packaged in a heavy plastic baggie along with the oil and manual. The thin paper manual has a few indentations from the wingnut on the air filter pressing into it, but the compressor unit itself is showroom clean. Very Nice - I did a lot of research before settling on this Makita compressor. The only thing that kept me from giving it a 5 was that damn air filter bouncing around in the packaging. Solid and Quite, but not packaged to be shipped upside down . . . - Bought this compressor based on Amazon reviews declaring its solid construction and quiet operation. Also, the unit is clearly packaged to survice shipment on a pallet, where it will stay right side up! Mine obviously spent some time on its head in the UPS truck, with the air filter housing digging into the pretty face plate. Superb compressor - Makita needs to fire their packing design person. - I am extremely happy with the compressor for general garage, woodworking, and around-the-house duties. My first unit was badly damaged by a loose air filter (with a thick metal bolt) that was just floating around in the box. I returned it, second unit also damaged in exactly the same spot also by the same free-floating air compressor. |

On arrival the box had major rips and crushed areas fairly typical of my experiences of UPS shipment with heavy items. |

I assume that Makita used to ship this item with air filter attached because there is no mention in the manual that you have to install the filter. Very good - The compressor is packed very well without any damage. After running it over 20 minuates, I discovered that I did not install the air filter. Lives up to all reviews - Follow the break-in directions! Put on the filter and add the oil. Reviewer from Arizona - I am pleased with this Makita's compressor. Comparing it to other light weight/low capacity compressors I had before the engine noise is not that bad. For instance the air filter is place in an aluminum container whereas most other small compressors use plastic containers instead which can easily break off. Great little compressor - Be sure to fill with oil and install the air filter before starting. Serious PITA, but cost was minimal and repair works fine. All in all, a great little compressor, and the best choice if noise is a concern. The powers that be heard about the shipping problems. - The compressor was in a second cardboard enclosure that isolated it from anything else in the first carton, the accessories (air filter, oil) were individually packed in sealed plastic bags and isolated in their own cardboard compartment. The compressor came with a universal quick change connector installed. Great Product - shipping bad - Our box was clearly tossed around or banged into during shippment which broke off the air filter assembly that screws into the cylinder head. To avoid the HUGE hassle of returning/shipping the compressor to Amazon, incurring shipping charges that were initially free when I ordered the compressor, lugging it back to UPS, and waiting for who knows how long for a replacement, I contacted Mikita and got a replacement part directly from them. Makita Delivered - My Makita compressor was delivered 1 day after placing my order - by UPS, no special handling. Instead of a noisly BRBRBRBRAAT that my previous compressor made, this machine just purrs, and conversations can be made without raised voices right on top of the unit. Set-up consists of adding the supplied container of oil, screwing on the chrome air filter, and running the unit for 15 minutes under no load to lubricate cylinder and valves. You won't find this compressor at Lowe's or Home Depot, and the ones you do see there are physically bigger, not much more capacity, and twice as expensive. The closest unit I could find was on eBay - 4 Gal unit oiled Eaton compressor at $165. Great compressor for my CD Eraser operation, bearable noise level - I bought a $300 DeWalt compressor and it was very loud. I have a blister packaging machine in the garage that requires compressed air to operate the heat sealing plate. Anyhow, this Makita compressor is used in the garage along with my machine and the noise level is bearable. Remember to put the filter before running it, before breaking it in. Great compressor, but check the box thouroughly before signing for delivery! - After working with a friend's older version of this compressor for the last eight months, I decided to splurge and get my own. If this compressor is anything like the older model, it's going to last forever. It looks like someone must've dropped it, and from a pretty good height! One of the legs was bent about 2 inches, so the compressor would rock when set down. Fortunately, the compressor itself (external tubes and gauges and whatnot) are all fine. It's annoying, but I don't want to go through the exchange process and be without air for another two weeks. The startup process is fairly simple. There are two plastic plugs on the compressor that need to come out. One covers the oil filler, and one covers the air intake port. You replace the plug on the air intake port (topmost plug) with the included air filter, and you replace the oil filler plug with the included oil cap. Then, open the air release valve at the very bottom of the air tank and run the compressor for 20 minutes. Check the oil level periodically, of course! On a related note, I also bought the Campbell Hausfeld MP520010AV air tool accessory kit to get me started. |
