Porter-Cable CPF23400S reviews (29)
A powerful ,compact compressor/reasonably priced!!!
I purchased this compressor for my crew of six men after I read the other reviews on the tool crib website. I am very impressed with the capabilities of this lightweight/powerful and relatively inexpensive compressor. As with all Porter Cable tools it is well designed, strongly constructed and built to LAST !! I especially like the two built in quick connects and the power to run two framing nailers at once from a small and easily transportable package. I highly recommend this product to anyone looking for a powerful, compact and one man transportable compressor. Three cheers and a Hoopla to Porter Cable on this one...
Plenty of Power to Offer...but it needs plenty, too.
This is a nice tight little machine which should have plenty of power
to run two hoses at one time, and the professional HVLP spray painting
gun I plan to use with it in my small general contracting business,
BUT, it will need the right power source. I tried the compressor on an
undedicated 15 amp circuit, and it immediately blew the switch every
time. I called Porter Cable and they admitted this 3HP motor NEEDS A
DICATED 15AMP CIRCUIT (with nothing else on the circuit to compete).
I also learned (the hard way, of course) that if you are using the
compressor with a 50' extension chord (with too high a guage) on a 20
amp circuit, the pump will not get enough electricity to pump air
after cutting-in when the tank pressure drops to 110 psi (the
specified cut-in pressure) - the pump will start pumping, but quickly
stop and you'll hear the motor straining until it blows the 20 amp
circuit, too. Porter Cable told me that if I plan to use even a 20
amp circuit with an extension chord, I need to use a 12 (preferable
10) gauge extention chord (ideally 25' rather than 50'), or the pump
won't get enough juice to cut-in properly and refill the tanks. It's
cheaper, my new Porter Cable friends say, to buy more air hose than
the right gauge extention chord - Ah, such knowledge I'm gaining.
Sadly, the compressor arrived with an air intake filter housing badly
bent downward (done apparently at the factory, as the box from Amazon
wasn't damaged), so I couldn't remove the air filter. AND, the drain
valve (to drain water from the bottom of the tank) would not
completely close allowing lots of air to excape from the tank. In my
chats with an Amazon tool sales rep, and later with a Porter Cable
tech rep (to help me unravel the compressor's electrical-needs
mysteries), both Companies quickly and nicely insisted on sending me a
new air intake filter housing and a new drain valve (I guess I'm
getting two of each?) - no questions asked. The machine is fairly
loud, but it only takes my pump about 6 seconds to refill the tanks
from the 110 psi cut-in pressure to the specified 135 psi cut-out
pressure. I figure the noise level goes hand-in-hand with the added
power this compressor offers - power I think I need. Suggestions: the
manufacturer needs to tighten quality controls inspection of the
product prior to boxing & shipping, and the editorial reviewers
need to "call a spade a spade" in write-ups on this tool's
power needs.
portercable compressor
This is a very good air compressor. I run multi-equipment from my air compressor every day. I am a contractor so my tools get much abuse. I will buy another porter cable compressor just like the one I have now but it still works like brand new so I dont see having to replace it in the near future. Thank You
This is a SERIOUS compressor
Desipite its small size and minimal air tank capacity, this is a very serious commercial duty air compressor. AC induction motors like the ones found in this compressor are far superior to brushed AC motors found in most "consumer" air compressors. Because of this motor, the compressor is able to deliver air flows similar to larger 15 gallon compressors. Plus, the motor will basically last forever. Quite frankly, I'm amazed that anyone can sell this compressor for such a low cost. I have one and I love it. Aside from air sanding or heavy duty HVLP paint spraying, there is nothing that I cannot do with this compressor.
Great General Purpose Portable Compressor
I bought this compressor to run nail guns, air sand and spray paint. It is much more compact than other units of similar capacity. The controls are conveniently located and easy to operate. There is an on/off switch located behind the main control that will turn off the unit if you leave it plugged in. (I always unplug everything before leaving my shop.) The tank pressure gauge is just behind it.

The main panel has a working pressure gauge with a pressure adjustment knob next to it. This regulates the pressure that reaches the hoses, not the tank pressure. If you work at lower pressures, the unit will not cycle as often. It is also handy to limit the pressure to safe levels for your various air tools. The two quick connect hose couplers are located on this panel also.

You do have to "break it in" before working with it; just open the drain valve and let it run for 15 minutes. Shut it off, close the valve and turn it back on; you're ready for action! The unit really is portable, especially with the well balanced carry handle protruding from the top. I can easily carry it with one hand from the tank side.

I plug it directly into a 20 amp circuit and have had no problems with breakers popping. I wired my shop area with 12/3 to carry enough current for power tools. The unit does not stay on too long when it cycles, so the noise is not really a problem. It is not as loud as large upright compressors, but it does make a fair amount of noise, although not as much as I expected.

It will keep up with nailers and other "burst" applications without cycling too often. I use it with a Souix air sander and it does run longer when I am working. I like to take a break every minute or so to clear dust anyway, so this is not a problem. I don't think it would keep up with two continuous flow tools. Painting on furniture sized projects is no problem. If you take on a tractor trailer, get a bigger compressor.

Overall, this is an outstanding unit with few limitations for the average user. I also consider it an great value, given its capacity and well thought out design. It will be a great addition to your shop. (It will also inflate tires!)

What a great little compressor
This little compressor is a real gem. I am building a log home that involves a lot of using nailguns and palm nailers. This task has not strained my Porter-Cable at all. It keeps up beautifully in 110 degree weather (I do keep it in the shade).

I would definitely buy another, although I don't think that will be necessary.

Porter Cable Compressor Review
My compressor arrived about 7 days after I placed my order. I used it to power my spraygun and paint my motorcycle. Keep in mind that your compressor does'nt include a hose, fittings, or a filter which is a good idea to extend the life of your air tools and a must to spray paint, so these items must be purchased seperatly. After adding my accesories I put it to work. Overall I'd say it worked very well. It's not too loud, it can fill up fairly quick, and most of all it provided plenty of power for what I was using it for, even when using a 100 foot extension cord. I am happy with the performance of my Porter Cable and would recommend it to anyone.
Frustrated with the technical assistance
When I bought my CPF23400S, I did it because I saw some good comments about Porter Cable equipments, and most important, they have a lot of places for technical assistance.
I received my compressor and unpack it. The first thing I notice he was unevenness, the feet was laming. But, it doesn't bother me. When I turn it on, the tank pressure gauge wasn't working.
Ops! It looks like a bad quality control. Ok, let see what to do.
So, I took the manual to see if they have some instructions about this kind of problem.
The first thing I've read on the manual was: "DO NOT RETURN THE DEFECTIVE PRODUCT TO THE RETAILER". So, I went to my computer and by internet, on Porter Cable website, I found a authorized service center close to my house (Willie's Small Engine - Pompano Beach, FL). I went there with the compressor and they took it and said to leave it there for one day, and on the next day they should call me to pick it up. But, after 3 days, they still didn't have changed the little tank pressure gauge, and they said "we are waiting for Porter Cable to send this piece to us, you have to wait until next week". And I was with a schedule to do a job on the next day. Ohhh! Come on!!!
I can't believe that! The most common and cheap part of a compressor they don't have in stock!?
Is that kind of technical assistance we have from Porter Cable when we just buy a brand new compressor and need it working???
I think I should send it back and bought another from another company, because, now, I'm just waiting and I can't do my job. Who's gonna pay for my loss?
Fast and Easy
I bought this compressor to finish my basement and enlarge my deck. So far I've used it with a framing nailer and it has more than enough power. I'd wish I'd bought this several projects ago. The price of the compressor and nailers is still way less than paying someone to do it. If it wasn't for these air tools I wouldn't have the time to do it. So easy and quick.
Excellent compressor - quietest I've used in its category
I am never able to live without a good air compressor. I use them for a variety of tasks from simple blowing to nailers and air hammers. As smaller air compressors go, this one really delivers a nice, steady pressure for quite a long time.

Normally I like to blow through my air gun at about 50psi to clear sawdust. Blowing air at that pressure really drains a small compressor fast, but this one really handles it well and gives me quite a bit of extra time due to the fact that the motor really kicks in quickly and efficiently to keep the pressure up. In fact, from empty it only takes about a minute to fill the tank, which is nice.

I couldn't outpace the compressor with a single nailer.

The two air ports is really nice in one this size because I can put the compressor underneath my workbench and mount a static line on my workbench for easy access anytime while leaving the other open for longer hoses.

The noise level of this unit is very acceptable. These size compressors can make an INCREDIBLE amount of noise, but the Porter-Cable 3hp 4 gallon side stack really keeps the noise level at a minimum. From the nicely padded feet to the obviously insulated drive casing, this quiets it down as much as can be hoped for.

Don't know yet
... I received a unit with a defective pressure switch which cuts out at 120 PSI instead of 135 PSI. Kimco, in Delta, OH, told me they would send a call tag for the defective unit and send me another one. When I called three days later to follow up, they then refused to take the unit back and replace it with a new one. I spoke with the owner of the company, Kim Allen, and he said that I would need to have it repaired under the warranty. After several calls to the toll-free number in the manual to the factory, I was put in touch with a repair facility an hour away and was told they don't stock the part but could order it and get it back to me in a few days.

This whole situation did not sound like the legendary customer service Porter Cable is known for. I contacted Porter Cable customer service and was told there is no reason why Kimco should not replace the unit - in fact, the very helpful customer service rep even explained that Porter Cable would pick up the return shipping costs.

I am now waiting for Kimco's Porter Cable rep, Jim White, to return my call. Hopefully, PC will come though without me spending four round trip hours and a week without a compressor. As for Kimco, I wouldn't buy from them again.

This Portable Compressor is Rugged and Well Built !
Surprised and impressed! I looked at Home Depot and Lowes and decided to order this air compressor to save the Tax and the trouble of bring it home.

SHIPPING WAS FREE, THAT SEALED MY DECISION TO BUY.

It was delivered to my door by U.P.S., No Damage, it made it to Texas in 4 days. The best part is that I didn't have to stuff this big box in the back of my car to bring it home. (Weighs 64 lbs. )

Pluged it in, It filled the 4 Gallon tank in 44 Seconds. Thats starting with the tank completely empty.

Looking at the other brands of portable compressors I really like how well this one is built.

It has a sturdy cage that protects the Tubing, Regulator, pressure switch, and brass connectors.

I expect to be using this tool for years to come.

Great for various air tools
Just for little bit more of money, it is much better equipment than a pancake version. It is little bit heavier, however, its design and build sturdier.

Outlet pressure control is very ease to use. It is essential that you change pressure for various tool you are using. i.e. HVLP spray gun (50psi), nail gun 110psi, torque wrench 100psi.

I have been using 50 ft extension cord with mine and have not had any problem not enough electrical power nor having any circuit breaker ever poping.

Size of the tank is fine, but its really about the horsepower of the motor and amount of air motor can put out so that you don't have long period of motor running in order to build a pressure in the tank. This 3hp engine is much better than large size tank with 2hp engine.

THIS IS THE ONE !!!!
I have had larger compressors, but this little guy keeps up with want ever jobs I have for it. Great Bang For The Buck
You cant beat it ! it's a must.
Fantastic Compressor
I am a DIY guy. I do crafts and wanted a compressor to replace my old one when it died. I preferred to have one that would also work an impact tool. I was told by others that none of these smaller compressors would do that. I decided that I didn't have money enough to get an industrial comprssor, so went ahead with this one. When I received it and plugged it in I was surprised to see that it went up a bit over 135 psi in less than 1 minute. It drove my Porter Cable narrow crown stapler with long runs before having to build more pressure. I decided to try an impact tool. I went to Wall Mart and picked up a 1/2" C&H. Since I rotate the tires on my car myself, I decided to put it to the test. No problem ! ! ! I could get most of the nuts off of one tire before the compressor would come on again. Perhaps this compressor wouldn't do for a mechanic, but for someone who changes their own tires, it does just fine. It is also light enough and small enough that I can throw it in the trunk of my car. I just finished doing some work at my sister-in-laws, and had it in the house. It is noisy, but I don't think any more so than any other compressor. Thanks for a great little work-horse.
good unit
I run this unit with the PC FC350 frame gun and I also use it with my Senco SNC40 trim gun . It powers them nicely .
Caution ; DO NOT use extension cords on units that have 2 pole ,3450 rpm motors as they are sensitive to voltage drops . The start capacitor will starve and the unit will appear broken.
Use longer hoses instead , ( I use swivels between hoses and at the nail gun). It reduces tangles.
Compact unit, poor packaging
my unit arrived with the plastic air intake filter housing broken... In the mean time I have patched the filter housing back together with electrical tape.

Other than the poor packaging; the unit is easy to operate, stable, compact, and provides plenty of air for general household use. Its duty cycle is limited to 30 minutes per hour, so it is not intended for heavy continuous use. But as long as you are not working at top speed, it will keep up with general painting and nailing.

Don't let the handle fool you.
I bought it to replace a 1 1/2 horse 2 gallon compressor because it's twice as powerful. I found it to also be at least twice as heavy. At 73 lbs your not going to be picking this puppy up and carrying it too far. I know now why most compressors this size have wheels. I was also surprised to find that a 15 amp circuit breaker was not big enough. I wanted an air compressor that could inflate tractor tires and power air tools. It certainly meets all of those needs. It is very quiet and appears to be very well made. I recommed this to any one looking for an good air compressor that stays for the most part in one place. I would also recommend a 20 amp circuit breaker.
Heavy Duty versatility
First off I am a homeowner, not a contractor and have been using this compressor in my house to do renovation trim work for over two years. I have not been running it on a dedicated 15-amp circuit and certainly not on a 20 amp circuit and it has yet to trip a breaker.
It is a fantastic compressor for my purposes. I rarely move it. I keep two hoses attached. I run one in to my garage for airing my tires, and one in the shop for projects. Ahh... the benefits of a two outlet panel. Yes you do need to break the machine in but that is all in the owner's manual.
When I move the compressor in to a room I am renovating, the two outlets also let me have two tools going at the same time, i.e., bradder and finish nailer without constantly disconnecting and reconnecting the hoses. A great time saver.
I will tell you it is LOUD but so are all compressors in this class, and this one is not as loud as my last old Campbell-Hausfeld. Nonetheless, if you are married, and you want to stay that way, put it where it won't be heard at night, or shut it off at night.
I will also say it is heavy. So if you are planning on moving your compressor around a lot, this is the WRONG compressor for you.
But if you want a relatively stationary compressor with greater than ordinary capabilities, you may agree this is the ticket.
It has run glitch free and recharge time is fast. For my purposes, I would definitely buy it again.
Darn Good Little Compressor
Short and sweet - this compressor delivers on its promises - it is easy to use, easy to break-in, easy to maintain, and you can't beat the duel air hose inlets. I have found both of the built in pressure gauges to be accurate, and the oil-free motor is quieter than other compressors I have used (although it still makes a good bit of noise). As for the portability, well...it weighs 65 lbs. To me, that's portable - I can understand how that would not be the case with everyone, but my experience leads me to believe that this compressor has a very good weight-to-horsepower-to-air storage capacity ratio. Also, this thing is built like a tank - strong welds, a great 'roll-cage' and tough rubber feet. Highly recommended.
Better than the pancake model
I've used the smaller Porter-Cable pancake compressor for about 2 years. I've had no problems with it using it 3 or 4 times a week for my wife's upholstery & drapery business (stapler and brad nailer).

This model excels in a few areas over the smaller one. First, and probably most obvious is that it runs less often with a larger capacity. Believe it ir not, though, when it does run it is quieter than the smaller one and it runs a fraction of the time before it cuts off. It is definitely less annoying. I like having the two outputs also. The only thing I don't think is an improvement is the knob for adjusting air pressure. It's too hard to turn and you have to do a lot of turning to get it up to 85 lbs.

This time I installed the compressor with the air hose reel from Amazon mounted right beside it on the floor. A bit difficult to install, but really worth it to keep the hose in order and out of the floor when it's not used. If you get the reel, you'll probably need to make a trip to the local hardware store for an interconnecting piece to connect the reel to the compressor.

I'm really happy with this tool -- its quiet operation (well, relative to the other one), short run time, and it stows out of the way in the same space I had the smaller one in. I now use the pancake style as the portable one (I agree, this one's too heavy)

almost perfect
Easily runs 2 guns at a time. Love that it kicks in at 110 psi or so which keeps the pressure always high. I say alsmost perfect because it will only work if your AC is perfect. For example, it won't run on my generator althought the generator outlet is rated at 15AMP. Don't know exactly why that would be but its a fact.
First Impressions...
It only took 3-days for my new compressor to arrive at my doorstep! And best of all, the shipping was free! I immediately unpacked the unit and checked it over. It was in perfect condition. I followed the manufacturer's advice and went through the 15-minute break-in period leaving the tank drain valve open while the motor was running. When I shut the valve after 15-minutes of run time, it only took a few seconds to fill the twin tanks to 130 p.s.i. (~90 p.s.i. output). Although I haven't used my compressor yet, first impressions are everything. This unit is compact, relatively light weight, fairly quiet, and fills up extremely quick! I can't wait to attach my air nailer and get to work!!!
Great little air compressor
This air compressor is great! This unit is fairly quiet, compact, light enough to be toted around if needed, no oil needed and very powerful. With 5.5 CFM @ 90 PSI, there is enough power to do most jobs around the house. This unit replaced a 12 year old 15 gallons, 2 hp, craftsman rolling air compressor and all I can say is that I wish I purchased this unit sooner. It runs quieter and is definitely more powerful then the craftsman. I like the portable size too, it doesn't take up too much room. When comparing the 2 units the Porter Cable is definitely stronger, the only difference being that when you are running any tools the compressor is running almost non stop compared to a unit with a larger tank that does not have to refill as fast. I consider this a plus though, because I always drain the tank after each use and it does not take as long to release all the air. At this price range there are many choices out there for anyone looking for a compact air compressor but when you start to compare CFM ratings @ 90 PSI this one has the highest ratings.
look no more
175 bucks and free shipping, no brainer, buy 2 because your neighbor won't return yours when you lend it to him.
Exceeds My Expectations
I had a Porter Cable pancake compressor and was happy with it for around the house projects and use. It was stolen (smart thief) and I replaced it with this compressor. This is a much more serious machine at just a fraction more of the cost. I ordered from Amazon, paid about $80 less than the local stores, paid no tax, shipping was free, and delivery was ahead of schedule and it arrived in perfect condition. This compressor is also quieter than the pancake compressor I had.
Great buy
Size of the tank is fine, but its really about the horsepower of the motor and amount of air motor can put out so that you don't have long period of motor running in order to build a pressure in the tank. This 3hp engine is much better than large size tank with 2hp engine.
Great Buy, but heavy to move around.
I have been a building contractor in California for over 26 years. This is the fourth compressor that I have bought. I have found it to to be a great value for the money.
Hasn't given us any of the trouble that our old " Emglo " unit did. ( blowing curcuit breakers, stalling, etc. )
My only complaint is its weight. Had I known, I would have purchased the next model up which comes with wheels. Weight is always a concern when moving from job to job.
Good blow for your dough
Solid construction, good power and features, and a good price - you can't really go wrong with this unit. The dual fittings and compact footprint come in handy in a small workshop. It is a little on the noisy side (though quieter than some) and has only tripped the 15 amp circuit in my garage twice in the last few months of use.
